Apple may ditch the iPhone's Lightning port in favor of USB-C. 

The iPhone 14 models kept the Lightning port though it appears Apple is planning to make a move to USB-C in 2023.

Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple will also transition other Lightning products to USB-C alongside the iPhone 15. He's reiterated this in a newer note on Twitter. Kuo says the move will be made in 2023 at the earliest.

Kuo says his latest checks indicate all iPhone 15 models will ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C. He also says wired transfer speeds will improve on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. 

The European Union has voted in favor of a plan that will force Apple to adopt USB-C on the iPhone and AirPods by 2024. Senators in the United States are also calling for a universal charging standard. And we've also heard that India is moving in this direction as well. 

Ben Wood, the chief analyst at CCS Insight says it's "inevitable that Apple will have to capitulate and transition to USB-C on the iPhone 15 when it arrives in 2023."

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says "Apple has been preparing for this law" and that it will "handily beat the due date with its most visible products."

Gurman believes the "iPhone 15 is essentially a lock to get USB-C in the fall of 2023, beating the mandate by a year."

Taiwanese research firm TrendForce backs up this information and believes the change to USB-C in 2023 is likely to happen.

And finally, Apple's Greg Joswiak says the company will have to comply with the rule change which confirms the company's plans to move to USB-C.

The move to a more common standard will likely be a welcomed change as it will allow users to carry a single cable for their devices while traveling. It should also cut down on unnecessary waste. 

A leaker says USB-C MFi cables and Earpods are in mass production, another sign this change is coming to iPhone sooner rather than later.
